What Vaccines Are Approved for Travelling to Canada?

Non-essential travels have resumed in Canada as of September 7th for most foreign nationals.

But the Canadian administration had selected and approved only specific vaccines.

On top of being fully vaccinated, there are other requirements that need to be fulfilled in order to be allowed in.

 

Which Vaccines Are Accepted to Travel in Canada?

The Canadian government has permitted travellers with one of 4 vaccines to resume their non-essential travel and be part of the reopening programme. These are:

  • Moderna
  • Pfizer-BioNTech
  • AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD
  • Janssen/Johnson & Johnson

Apart from that, the applicant must have been vaccinated with the final jab of Covid-19 vaccine at least 14 full days before boarding the plane. For instance, if you were received your second Pfizer dose on September 1st, you will be allowed in as of September 16th.

 

Also, your vaccination certificate must be in French or English. If not, it must have been translated by a professional translation organization.

Once you have the vaccination certificate in either French or English, you will need to upload it on the ArriveCAN application 72 hours before flying at most.

Lastly, the original certificate must be kept as evidence when landing in Canada.

 

Which Vaccines Are Not Approved for Travelling to Canada?

All the other vaccinations out of the ones above are not approved by the Canadian administration.

These unapproved ones are:

  • Sinovac
  • Cansino
  • Gamaleya
  • Sinopharm
  • Vector Institute
  • Bharat Biotech

International travellers attempting to enter Canada being vaccinated with one of those brands will be requested to quarantine for 14 days.

 

Do I Need to Quarantine to Enter Canada?

Quarantine is not required for fully vaccinated travellers who received their final dose 14 full days before entering.

That is under the condition to have been vaccinated with either Pfizer, Moderna, Janssen (Johnson and Johnson), or AstraZeneca.

Oppositely, travellers who received another vaccine or were not vaccinated at all still need to quarantine for 14 days.

 

Do I Need to Get Tested for Covid-19 to Enter Canada?

Yes, before boarding the flight to Canada, all passengers must have been tested negative for Covid-19.

The molecular test for Covid-19 must have been taken 14 to 180 days before arrival.

The exemptions to this rule are:

  • Children aged younger than 5 years old
  • Travellers entering by boat
  • People crossing the land border

In addition, random tests are to be conducted at one of the 8 airports allowed to reopen.

This means that any traveller, vaccinated or not, can be subject to a randomized Covid-19 test upon arrival.

 

What is ArriveCAN and What is the Purpose?

ArriveCAN is an approved mobile application that is used to track all international travellers’ information. The application must be downloaded and the following information must be uploaded and submitted:

  • Proof of vaccination against Covid-19 in French or English
  • Quarantine information – in case the traveller didn’t get vaccinated or received an unapproved vaccine
  • Travel details – Flight number, country of origin, and more

Uploading your information on ArriveCAN is extremely important. In fact, the travellers who fail to submit their data may be denied entry into Canada. Lastly, you must enter your details prior to boarding the plane and at most 72 hours ahead of time.
