Starting March 15, 2016, Canadians living in Costa Rica (or any other country abroad) are asked to make sure to carry proper identification for oneself and any children to assist in confirming the legal right or authorization to enter Canada.

The authorization is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Implementation of the eTA program would achieve Canada’s commitment to the Canada-U.S. shared vision for perimeter security and economic competitiveness, thereby accelerating the free flow of people and goods while maintaining the strength of the Canada-U.S. partnership.
